UPS package carsOne of the things I admire about UPS is its willingness – despite a very strong, structured culture – to embrace change when necessary.  UPS will turn 103 years old this year and in that time, it’s developed and pursued five different business plans that required transformation. The UPS Racing Truck steps up the pace at the famous Nurburgring circuit in GermanyGermans are crazy about cars. They are, after all, the ones who invented the modern motor vehicle, and to this day Germany is known for designing and producing the best cars on the planet in terms of engineering and overall quality. It comes as little surprise then that the UPS automotive team at the Hanover hub in Germany would come up with the idea of taking a 17-year old P60 package car with 600,000 kilometres on the clock under UPS colours and turning it into the beast you see before you. UPS Circle of Honor Recognizes Elite Group of Safe Drivers

UPS drivers across the globe drive 3.3 billion miles per year. They average less than one accident per million miles driven – an incredible statistic. That stat is due to two things: UPS has the best safe driving training in the world, and UPS drivers take an enormous amount of pride in what they do. Training and pride – it’s an unbeatable combination. And the proof is in the pudding. This year, 934 new Circle of Honor members were added to the total of current active drivers with 25 years or more without an accident. The total number of UPS drivers who have steered clear of accidents for 25 years or more now stands at 4,788. And on top of that remarkable number, Ron Sowder of UPS’s Kentucky District has attained 48 years of safe driving. Florida’s Ginny Odom, the top female safe driver stands alone with 35 years without an accident. Read More »

DIAD V Update

I get to work on user testing to help determine what is needed in future versions of the driver handheld devices, called DIAD (Delivery Information Acquisition Device.) And to do this we ask the experts, UPS drivers:  In January 2008 a driver survey was conducted requesting user feedback, pros and cons, concerning the DIAD IV.  The results indicated three areas of concern:  1) the placement of the signature key, due to customers inadvertently hitting this key; 2) the shifted keypad, which requires the driver to toggle between alpha and numeric characters; and 3) the size of the device, too big and too heavy.  Read More »

UPSer Craig Arnold is on the ground in Haiti, doing his best to bring relief and comfort to this devastated nation. Here’s an update on his activities today:

Today was OK.  We are starting to send some people home and replacing them with people who will stay much longer.  Lots of trips to the airport sitting on the runway grass waiting.  That is what I’m doing know.   In the last 30 minutes I saw the military land 13 huge planes rolling off trucks and supplies.

Watching the pictures of the hungry people of Haiti, it’s easy to wonder why food and water aren’t yet accessible everywhere. After all it’s been nearly a week since the quake, thousands of relief workers are on the ground, and people around the world have donated money and supplies.

The reason is logistics. The Haiti relief supply chain is global and complex.  Chip Chappelle, an Atlanta-based UPS transportation manager, is spending nearly 24 hours-a-day trying to coordinate shipments of life saving food, water and medical supplies. On top of the usual complexities of international trade, these deliveries are all hampered by broken infrastructure, limited equipment, shifting supply origins and conflicting information.  Read More »

So I thought it was a fitting honor when Dr. King’s birthday became a national holiday to celebrate the values of justice, compassion and service that he so powerfully lived by. Read More »
