On October 21, UPSer Teri McClure joined the ranks of some of the nation’s most respected attorneys. She received the Scales of Justice Award for 2010. Equal Justice Works has given this award every year since 1997 for attorneys who have demonstrated a record of promoting equality, justice, diversity, public service, and pro bono service. Past winners include former U.S. Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and George Mitchell along with Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (formerly of The Coca-Cola Co.) and Benjamin Heineman, senior counsel for General Electric.
In accepting the award at a gala dinner in Washington, McClure talked about the UPS commitment to volunteerism and acknowledged the support of her family, including her mom, Donna Plummer, husband, Roderick, and daughters Kristin and Morgan. She also talked about her two grandfathers who taught her the value of service as she was growing up in Kansas City.
“My grandfather on my dad’s side was an attorney,” McClure said in her acceptance remarks. “But he was initially unable to make a living practicing law due to the racial challenges in Kansas at the time. To support his family, he took a job at the post office, retired, and then hung out his shingle to start his law practice at the age of 65. He was a forceful advocate for the people of his community and a great coach for me on the art and science of debate. We debated everything in my family.”
“My grandfather on my mother’s side sponsored baseball and basketball leagues in the community for boys who did not have a lot of direction. The impact of his counsel and commitment to so many young men in the neighborhood amazes me to this day.”
McClure said that her grandfathers taught her lifelong lessons about service. “The little actions we take to help others can and do have a big impact—often more than we realize.”
McClure, UPS senior vice president of Legal, Compliance and Public Affairs and General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, was nominated for her service on the boards of the UPS Foundation, Atlanta Legal Aid, the Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights and the Annie E. Casey Foundation, as well as for her involvement with the Georgia Supreme Courts Committee on Civil Justice.
