January 10, 2011 was just another typical day for Willow Grove Mechanic Andy Grandy as he drove his shifter, a golf cart sized vehicle, through the feeder yard toward his next job. Then, in an instant, his day and his life were changed forever.
Feeder Jockey John Thompson was driving on the north side of the building when he noticed a trailer veering toward staged trailers parked in the yard. Immediately noticing that no one was in the driver seat, he feared the worst.
John then noticed the driver was slumped over in the vehicle and that he needed to get to the trailer to pop the brake.
As John opened the cab door, Andy happened to be driving past and jumped in to help.
He climbed into the trailer and began administering CPR. By this time, others had come to offer assistance, but Andy remained in control. Finally, after a few minutes of CPR, the unconscious feeder driver coughed and began to regain consciousness and color.
Emergency response teams arrived on the scene and escorted the driver to the hospital. Today, the driver is home recovering from a heart attack and is expected to fully recover.

On Friday, February 25, Andy was presented with the Liberty Mutual Life Saver Award, established in 1923, for saving the life of his co-worker. In a recognition ceremony attended by co-workers, Liberty Mutual Consultant Paul DiFranceisco said, “Andy told me that anyone in my shoes would have done the same thing if faced with this scenario. Well, today, you are that anyone and you deserve to be recognized for your actions.”
“We at UPS are very proud of Andy,” said Automotive Division Manager Don Manuele. “Let me read the quote that is on the award because it simply puts this entire experience into perspective: To Act is Life and not to do is Death, by Lewis Morris, Epic of Hades Sisyphus, 1877. Congratulations Andy, this is well deserved.”
