I’m proud of my father’s service as a medic in the U.S. Army for six years. Being deployed away from home for long periods of time and possibly in harm’s way is a sacrifice that is hard to repay.
UPS is also proud of their military employees. In fact, approximately 25,000 UPSers are veterans and about 2,500 UPSers are currently on military leave.
This Sunday is Veteran’s Day, a holiday honoring and thanking all United States Armed Forces members for their service. We asked UPSers to share their stories about serving in the military. Here are just a couple of them:
Thomas Cole, Transportation Technology Group Shared Services
“Good leaders in the military are good leaders in the civilian work force. For me it was all about taking care of people the same way I took care of soldiers while deployed to the Czech border, Haiti and Bosnia. In that regard the transition was easy. The military taught us about equal opportunity, gender discrimination, and counseling techniques. I just used those same lessons at UPS.”
Doug Smith, Manager, Operations Services
“I served for 9 years in the US Navy prior to joining Overnite Transportation in 1997. My first 4 years were on the USS Peleliu (LHA-5), based in Long Beach CA. We made 3 Pacific Cruises, one of which included Operation Desert Storm, 2 years at Commander Amphibious Group One in Okinawa Japan working on the Admiral’s staff and 3 years as a Drill Instructor at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center where I trained 9 Recruit Companies and taught Silent Drill Teams during my off months. Proud of my Service and Thank all other Veterans for their Service.”
Lonnie Wymes, Jr.
“I’ve been recalled to active duty twice since I’ve been with UPS. I served 6 months in Sicily and 15 months in Afghanistan. When I returned to UPS, all of my fellow workers shook my hand and thanked me for my service.”
Has your military service helped you out in your career? Let us know how.
