This month, UPS celebrates 104 years of business. Our founder, Jim Casey, instilled in UPSers a spirit of service to our customers and our community. While Jim may not have regarded himself as a “hero,” his commitment to community service has delivered a lasting impact. Jim and his siblings founded the Annie E. Casey Foundation (AECF) in 1948 to honor their mother, who struggled to raise the family as a young widow. The AECF serves as an advocate to help vulnerable children and families succeed.

Summer has delivered its annual blend of heat and humidity to most parts of the U.S. For UPS drivers – who spend most of their working hours outside – staying safe during hot weather is crucial.

Here at UPS, we take a comprehensive approach to safety and wellness with hydration as a key element. In fact, our hydration program is a year-round effort that includes a hydration self-check card. According to UPS Occupational Health Manager Janice Hartgens, “Hydration is fundamental to our safety process. We would like our employees and their families to develop hydration habits that become second nature.”

So what are the best practices that UPS employees follow? And how are they useful to others? Read on.

UPS Response to U.K. Security Measures for Air Cargo Shipments
Category: UPS News
Tags: , , ,

Earlier today, news media outlets reported on the Department for Transport’s review of UPS shipments in the U.K.

Security is important. UPS actively works with government agencies and authorities around the world to ensure the safety of our transportation network.

A scheduled review by the Department for Transport identified areas of concern at UPS facilities, which we are working to address. As a result, some UPS facilities in the U.K. have been taken offline which has led to delays for some shipments. We are communicating with customers whose shipments have been impacted and we expect our delivery service levels to return by early next week.

For more details and updates on this matter, please read UPS’s statement at our Pressroom site.

Smart Energy Use is No April Fool’s Joke: President Obama Visits UPS to Discuss Energy Policy

While tomorrow is April Fool’s Day, energy policy is no joke. We’re proud that President Obama chose to discuss his energy policy at UPS. During his visit on April 1, he’ll meet with employees and check out a few of the alternative-fuel vehicles in our fleet.

A key goal of the president’s plan is to limit the country’s dependency on foreign oil by reducing exports by one-third. At UPS, shrinking our overall fuel consumption makes good sense for business and the environment. From 2000 to 2009, we lowered our fuel use by 3.2 million gallons while increasing the miles our drivers traveled by 77.3 million miles. UPS’s fleet of nearly 2,000 alternative-fuel vehicles helped deliver those savings while also reducing overall carbon emissions.

Be sure to return to the upside blog after the president’s visit to see photos and read insights from the event.
