For the ninth October, UPS employees around the world have joined with their friends and family to take part in volunteer projects in local communities.  At UPS, we call it Global Volunteer Month

Today, 11-to-13 million people are starving and are fleeing southern Somalia for camps in Kenya.  Experts are calling it the worst drought in 60 years. More than 2 million children (under the age of five) in Somalia as well as in parts of Kenya and Ethiopia are acutely malnourished, including almost 500,000 children in an immediate life-threatening state.  In addition, children are more vulnerable to the spread of killer diseases, especially to outbreaks of measles, diarrhea and pneumonia.

In response to this tragic situation, UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP) have officially released urgent appeals for assistance.  This week, UPS committed to leverage its global logistics network to help speed emergency supplies to the region.

In April, Merck Director Tai Eto reached out to UPS Customer Solutions to ship allergen-free products for children to Japan. Tai and his wife, originally from Japan, are the parents of a child with extreme food allergies and they thought this was a cause worth supporting. Tai’s wife, Rimi, had gained support from both people and companies across the U.S. to help kids and adults with food allergies who had been suffering after the earthquake and tsunami. Together, Tai and Rimi worked with different manufacturers across the U.S. to collect donations of allergen-free food and were seeking to close the loop with the final transportation component.

The UPS Foundation Grant Inspires More Giving to Environmental Projects

I’m thrilled to share that the UPS $100,000 challenge grant to Donor Choose in support of environmental projects has been matched completely by individual donors.

In 2010, UPS made a $100,000 grant to Donors Choose to support 50% of costs for rural environmental projects for local school children. With help from local agencies, Donors Choose recruited teachers in rural communities across the country to submit environmental projects in 255 different cities. The teachers needed resources like water testing kits, weather forecasting instruments, compost bins, stream modeling set-ups, and butterfly gardens for projects that help children learn about how things work in their environment. And, the money went directly to the teachers to support these projects.

During the days and nights from April 25-28, 244 tornadoes ravaged the southeastern United States. This outbreak became the largest in U.S. history, beating the 170 record set in May 2004. In particular, on April 27 a massive tornado struck the Alabama town of Tuscaloosa.

In response, UPS activated its Logistics Action Teams to support the American Red Cross’s (ARC) relief efforts. The UPS Foundation also pledged $600,000 to the ARC’s Disaster Fund.

UPS VP of Transportation Al Bedran and his family watched the devastation unfold on TV. They were among the thousands whose hearts were so touched, they were compelled to lend a hand to those most affected. Al, his wife Wendy and her mother Linda Waldrep headed to Cullman, Ala., a town about 100 miles northeast of Tuscaloosa, and volunteered their services to the ARC.

We’re delighted to have Sarah S. Al Suwaidan of Kuwait guest blog about her experiences from the recent UPS-supported Young Women’s World Forums. This is one of the early results of the $2 million, five-year commitment we announced at the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative.

I am grateful to UPS for supporting the Young Women’s World Forums and inviting me to share my experiences.

This past week, our own Teri Plummer McClure, senior vice president of legal, compliance & public affairs and general counsel & corporate secretary at UPS, was honored at 2011 Girls Inc. New York Luncheon Celebrating Women of Achievement.

Teri was joined by top female executives from the PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., Rite Aid, Gensler and American Express who, through their work and example, are creating a better future for girls. This is the 27th year that Girls Inc. has celebrated such individuals and the Girls Inc. mission of inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and BOLD. Pretty cool!

Girls Inc. is a nonprofit organization that inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold, through a network of local organizations in the United States and Canada. In 2009, Girls Inc. reached more than 900,000 girls through Girls Inc. affiliates and educational publications. UPS regularly donates to Girls Inc. and our employees volunteer with local affiliates in the US and Canada.
