Introductions at a typical UPS meeting include name, position and number of years with the company. When I first came to work here, I was amazed at the number of collective years reported. It seemed 20+ years was closer to the rule than the exception. Even now, with 12 years under my belt – sometimes I still feel like a newbie who can barely find the water fountain.

Every year on Founders’ Day, along with celebrating the company’s anniversary, we recognize employee anniversary milestones (20, 25, 30, etc.). And this year, the Communications Department is celebrating the very special 40th anniversary of one of our own. Yes – that’s the BIG 4-0. It is an amazing milestone for one of our favorite characters, Geno “Cool Cat” Reilly.

Finally! The day has arrived – as the editor of the UPS sustainability report, I’m pleased to announce that  after many months of gathering details and checking facts, we’ve launched the 2010 edition, themed “Sustainability Is…”

So, sustainability is what, exactly?  I’d say it depends a lot on who’s talking and who’s listening. Sustainability, really, is in the eye of the beholder. UPSers John Vera and Bill Torres spent six weeks in the Dominican Republic supporting the World Food Programme’s disaster relief efforts following the January 12th earthquake in Haiti. Here’s a look back from John:

After six extremely grueling weeks, both mentally and physically, Bill Torres and I have come to the conclusion of our Haiti humanitarian mission.  Although we were stationed out of the Dominican Republic, it did not make the work load any less difficult or less stressful. On the contrary, the distance often hampered our goal of getting the goods into an impoverished Haiti quickly and efficiently. Since we orchestrated the logistical moves out of the Santo Domingo airport it was often evident that the need and urgency we felt to deliver the goods was not reciprocated by the locals, especially the owners of the bonded warehouses where the goods were stored.

Ginny OdomUPS recently held an event to celebrate the expansion of UPS Road Code to Orlando. UPS Road Code is a safe driving class for teens taught by UPS volunteers at Boys & Girls Clubs across the United States. At this particular event, Ginny Odom, UPS’s safest female driver on the road, was onsite to share some words of wisdom with the teens. I took the opportunity to ask her a few questions of my own. In 2008, John Vera and Bill Torres went to Haiti to offer their logistical expertise in the aftermath of two devastating hurricanes. Touched by the experience and by the people they met two-years ago, they have signed up once again to help Haiti following the recent earthquake. John and Bill are part of UPS’s participation in the UN’s Logistics Emergency Teams, which support the World Food Programme’s disaster response. This time, they will work from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Read More »

It has been seven years now that UPS has rallied its employees all over the world to volunteer during the month of October. While UPS’s culture has always supported volunteerism, there were some concerns when we proposed the program that has become Global Volunteer Month (instead of Global Volunteer Week). Read More »
