“3 Reasons Why We Ship With UPS”
medelita

The following was posted by Dan Stepchew, chief marketing officer for Medelita on the company’s blog

We use UPS as the preferred shipping method for all of our orders, especially our international orders, for a whole list of business-related reasons that I don’t need to get into. There are, however, 3 main benefits that we enjoy when working with UPS:

1. Our orders get where they need to go, end of story.

While we completely understand that not every single package is going to make it to our customers exactly on time and in the right place, an overwhelming majority of them do. This is astounding considering the company delivers an average of 1.6 million packages in a single day using 237 airplanes in 220 countries around the world. When a package doesn’t get where it needs to go, it’s typically a painless process to resolve the situation. Read More »

Kuehn Sees Growth in Next-Day Delivery
Capture

While established companies and recent start-ups promising same-day delivery are getting a lot of media air time these days, UPS Chief Financial Officer Kurt Kuehn predicts even faster growth for shippers who wait just a little longer.

“Same day is not new. Courier services have been doing that in metro areas for a long time,” said Kuehn, who appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box as a part of the network’s Global CFO Council series. “We think rather than same-day delivery, the big push will be local next-day delivery. We see (next day) as a much bigger force over time than the limited same day deliveries.” Read More »

A ‘Mentor Match’ Made in Heaven
newtphoto

For 82-year-old small business owner Newt Malerman, finding his mentor was a serendipitous event. Over the course of his life, Newt had shifted career paths six or seven times without much hesitation. But when faced with a business venture that led him into unchartered waters, he began drowning in his own fear and self-doubt. A mentor came to his rescue and offered him a lifeline.

While Newt had a history of owning small businesses, most of them had been within his comfort zone. His first love was art. He attended art school and after graduation, followed a natural progression. Newt became an artist, an art teacher and eventually, transitioned to become president of a graphic arts/embroidery business. When the business transferred overseas and he lost his job, Newt returned to his first love, opening an art gallery with his wife and fellow artist. Read More »

Twenty-Five Years in the Air: The Silver Anniversary of UPS Airlines
Louisville, 1988

February 1 marks a major milestone for UPS Airlines — 25 years since our first flight on our own operating certificate. The airline set the stage for our worldwide expansion, starting with a single DC-8 flight from Louisville to Milwaukee.

The launch of the airline marked a significant change for UPS. Long-known for dependable delivery of packages across the United States, air operations enabled us to expand internationally. Now we serve more than 220 countries and territories worldwide, and UPS aircraft are a familiar sight at airports across the globe.

Check the UPS Team Performance Index Before You Make Your Bracket Picks
basketball going into hoop

You’ve heard many pundits over the years talk about their views on how defense wins championships, or how offense or teamwork wins championships. Everyone has their own formula on what one element is the most important to team success.

But it’s hard for anyone to argue that if you combine all of the right elements together – teamwork, efficiency, speed, and reliability – that teams that perform at the highest levels across all facets of the game will win more often than those that do not.

Louis Oosthuizen Makes a Comeback to Win First Tournament of the Year
Louis Oosthuizen

UPS golf ambassador Louis Oosthuizen dazzled his onlooking countrymen while holding off Scotland’s Scott Jamieson to win the 2013 Volvo Golf Champions in Durban, South Africa last weekend. Louis shot a closing round 66 to catch the field and claim his first victory of the 2013 golf season.

After a disappointing 3rd round that saw Louis shoot a 74 (I would take that in a heartbeat, but enough about my golf game), he stormed out of the gates on Sunday birdieing six of the first 11 holes and setting a blistering pace to the last round.

Thanksgiving Dinner and Your Supply Chain? It’s All About Logistics
table

Have you started planning your Thanksgiving meal yet?  By now, you’ve probably thought about all the logistical details like: what items are required to bring the meal together; who’s responsible for bringing each dish; what time guests should arrive; and where dinner should be served so there’s enough room for everyone.

Without having full knowledge and control over many of these elements, you can only trust that everyone involved will come through – on time and as promised.  You have no way to tell beforehand that a guest is going to hold up dinner by arriving 45 minutes late or that someone will forget to bring the mashed potatoes or that unexpected guests will show up, requiring more space at the table!

Want to be Santa’s Helper? We’re Hiring Seasonal Employees
Holiday delivery

Could you use some extra money to help pay for those extra holiday gifts?

A recent survey reports that Americans have spent about $650 per household on holiday gifts for loved ones over the past two years. As my household continues to grow, I’d say that number is conservative.

UPS is currently hiring approximately 1,000 seasonal employees in the Louisville area, with jobs starting at $20 an hour for full-time seasonal drivers. Driver helpers are also needed, with those jobs starting at $12.88 an hour. There’s also a need for part-time package handlers who work a few hours each day starting at $8.50 an hour. Both day and night-shift positions are available.
