February 1 marks a major milestone for UPS Airlines — 25 years since our first flight on our own operating certificate. The airline set the stage for our worldwide expansion, starting with a single DC-8 flight from Louisville to Milwaukee.

The launch of the airline marked a significant change for UPS. Long-known for dependable delivery of packages across the United States, air operations enabled us to expand internationally. Now we serve more than 220 countries and territories worldwide, and UPS aircraft are a familiar sight at airports across the globe.

You’ve heard many pundits over the years talk about their views on how defense wins championships, or how offense or teamwork wins championships. Everyone has their own formula on what one element is the most important to team success.

But it’s hard for anyone to argue that if you combine all of the right elements together – teamwork, efficiency, speed, and reliability – that teams that perform at the highest levels across all facets of the game will win more often than those that do not.

UPS golf ambassador Louis Oosthuizen dazzled his onlooking countrymen while holding off Scotland’s Scott Jamieson to win the 2013 Volvo Golf Champions in Durban, South Africa last weekend. Louis shot a closing round 66 to catch the field and claim his first victory of the 2013 golf season.

After a disappointing 3rd round that saw Louis shoot a 74 (I would take that in a heartbeat, but enough about my golf game), he stormed out of the gates on Sunday birdieing six of the first 11 holes and setting a blistering pace to the last round.

Have you started planning your Thanksgiving meal yet?  By now, you’ve probably thought about all the logistical details like: what items are required to bring the meal together; who’s responsible for bringing each dish; what time guests should arrive; and where dinner should be served so there’s enough room for everyone.

Without having full knowledge and control over many of these elements, you can only trust that everyone involved will come through – on time and as promised.  You have no way to tell beforehand that a guest is going to hold up dinner by arriving 45 minutes late or that someone will forget to bring the mashed potatoes or that unexpected guests will show up, requiring more space at the table!

Could you use some extra money to help pay for those extra holiday gifts?

A recent survey reports that Americans have spent about $650 per household on holiday gifts for loved ones over the past two years. As my household continues to grow, I’d say that number is conservative.

UPS is currently hiring approximately 1,000 seasonal employees in the Louisville area, with jobs starting at $20 an hour for full-time seasonal drivers. Driver helpers are also needed, with those jobs starting at $12.88 an hour. There’s also a need for part-time package handlers who work a few hours each day starting at $8.50 an hour. Both day and night-shift positions are available.

It’s always exciting to track the progress of our three golf ambassadors, but 2012 has been a particularly incredible year.

It started with Louis Oosthuizen winning the first European Tour event of the year, the Africa Open, in January. What better way to start? He then came within an inch, literally, of winning the Masters, losing in a playoff to Bubba Watson. He did provide one of the tournament’s most spectacular moments ever with his famous double-eagle at the 2nd hole. Just one short week later, Louis recorded his second victory of the season by winning the Maybank Malaysian Open.

Mirror Mirror on the Floor: Our New HHVs

When I wanted to see what makes UPS’s new hydraulic hybrid vehicle (HHV) special, I just had to look down. At its ignition ceremony on October 11 in Laurel, MD marking the delivery of the HHVs, there were mirrors on the ground to reflect the image of the new package delivery truck’s energy-saving system. People could inspect this alternative fuel vehicle’s (AFV) workings up close without donning a pair of coveralls and sliding underneath. Personally, I was glad for that convenience.
