The Year in Review: Golf Edition (Video)
UPS golfers Louis Oosthuizen, Lee Westwood and Jeev Milkha Singh

It’s always exciting to track the progress of our three golf ambassadors, but 2012 has been a particularly incredible year.

It started with Louis Oosthuizen winning the first European Tour event of the year, the Africa Open, in January. What better way to start? He then came within an inch, literally, of winning the Masters, losing in a playoff to Bubba Watson. He did provide one of the tournament’s most spectacular moments ever with his famous double-eagle at the 2nd hole. Just one short week later, Louis recorded his second victory of the season by winning the Maybank Malaysian Open.

Lee Westwood talks about The Open Championship: Video
Lee Westwood

I grew up around the game of golf – driving the cart around the course, holding the flag so that my parents could sink in a putt, and doing the math to tell my mom how well (or poorly) she was doing.

Much to my father’s chagrin, I never picked up the sport.  I found it very frustrating to be precise when hitting such a little ball.  Hand/eye coordination has never been my strong suit.

Our ambassadors Lee Westwood, Louis Oosthuizen, and Jeev Milkha Singh will be teeing off today at The Open Championship and we wish them the best of luck.  Bring home that Claret Jug!

Watch below to hear Lee talk about this tournament.

UPS Golf Ambassador Keeps Tight Grip On World’s #1 Ranking

Golfer Lee Westwood retained his world’s No. 1 position with an exciting finish to the Ballatine’s Championship in South Korea over the weekend.

Lee had to sweat out a birdie putt attempt on the last hole by Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, which if it had gone in would have put the two friends in a playoff.  The win is Lee’s second in as many weeks (he won last week on the Asian Tour in Jakarta to take over the world’s No. 1 ranking).

Happy Birthday To Lee: UPS Golf Ambassador Westwood Back On Top Of World Golf Rankings

Persistence pays off. Yesterday Lee Westwood won the Indonesian Masters in Jakarta to reclaim the world golf ranking’s No. 1 seat from Germany’s Martin Kaymer.

Lee celebrated his 38th birthday on Sunday and what better present to himself than to wrestle away the top spot from the young, talented German. All was not just birthday wishes and blowing out candles as Lee won on the other side of the world and had to wait the equivalent of a half-day to find out if he would, indeed, again become the world’s top rated golfer.

Louis OosthuizenSouth African Louis Oosthuizen has signed on to become UPS’s newest brand ambassador for golf. The man, affectionately nicknamed Shrek by his friends for his uncanny resemblance to the character, will join the world’s top ranked golfer, England’s Lee Westwood, along with Indian born Jeev Milkha Singh to make up the UPS golf ambassadors.

A Conversation with Professional Caddy and Straight-shooter Billy Foster

Billy FosterThe BMW PGA Championship, which begins on May 20, is the flagship tournament of The European Tour and undoubtedly a highlight for UPS golf ambassador Lee Westwood and his caddy, Billy Foster. Despite his busy schedule, Billy was kind enough to answer some questions recently for upside and as you’ll read, professional golfers don’t hold a monopoly on colorful personalities.

Golf Sponsorship Stays on Course

Lee WestwoodI was on fire the first time I went to a driving range, scalding those little white balls far and straight. I couldn’t understand why everyone complained that this sport was so difficult. Guess I was just a natural. The next morning I made my course debut and proceeded to shoot a 75. On the first hole.

Although my golf career ended abruptly, I still enjoy watching the experts ply their trade, especially Lee Westwood, who is one of three golfers representing UPS in tournament play and at customer hospitality and brand promotion events.

Jan Squire began learning the caddy trade when she was only 13 at Sunningdale Golf Club, UK. Today, she is teamed up with golf champion and UPS brand ambassador Jeev Milkah Singh as part of UPS’s sponsorship of the European Tour, one of the most prestigious golf tours in the world. Recently, I sat down with Jan – one of only two female caddies working on the European Tour – to learn more about her interesting and unique life on and off the course.
