It’s not quite Halloween but it’s already time to start thinking about the holidays.
I may not have my list for Santa ready, but here at UPS we’ve been planning our holiday logistics all year. We’ll add 55,000 extra brown-suited Santa helpers to help deliver more packages this year than ever – more than half a billion!
And, Thursday, December 20 – which is just 51 days away – will be the busiest day in our history when we’ll deliver more than 28 million packages – that’s more than 300 packages every second of the day.
Halloween is right around the corner and I still have no idea what costume I will wear.
I’ve traditionally stayed clear of ghost and goblins, last year rallying with friends as a battalion of Spartan characters re-enacting the Battle of Thermopylae from the action film 300. We were met by costumed foes as we trekked the Waikiki strip in Honolulu, Hawaii, but ended the night victorious, chanting one of the film’s most remembered lines: “This … is … Sparta!”
It was a lot of fun, but it was so much easier 24 years ago when my mother selected my costumes and I’d venture out in the neighborhood dressed as my favorite cartoon character or sports figure.
At UPS, we’re proud to love logistics. Planning, multi-tasking, transporting … yes, we love it all. But there’s one group that shines as the “original logistics experts” – Moms. They’re often the engineers in the family … keeping everything (and everyone) synchronized while skillfully navigating daily obstacles. At the heart of logistics is a well-run operation. And at the heart of the family is mom.
So how do you celebrate the “CEO” of the family?
Our #Deliver2Mom Twitter Parties will deliver fun ideas and a bit of inspiration to honor moms. We’ll also offer tips to keep your gift giving (and gift shipping) experience hassle free … such as packing advice from The UPS Store and how to manage your deliveries with UPS My Choice.
Love is in the air … and on the road as UPSers gear up to deliver gifts of love for Valentine’s Day. While jewelry topped last year’s list of Valentine’s gifts, candy remains a popular option too. Online retailers will be busy, with 32% of U.S. consumers saying they plan to purchase their Valentine’s gifts on the web this year.
The Chinese New Year has always been about the reunion with family and relatives. Chinese from all over the world would return home to be with their families. Well, in Singapore it is no different. This Chinese New Year, I know of several overseas friends and colleagues who will be returning to Singapore for their reunions.
As for me and many Singaporean Chinese families, it’s all about coordinating the timing for each activity. It used to be so much easier before I was married. I just follow the schedule as set out by my parents on who to visit and when.
This weekend, millions of Chinese will travel afar to spend their New Year in their home town. I might find myself traveling away from my home town of Hong Kong and on the road in China. Two years ago, my family and I drove straight through wealthy and industrious Guangdong province and deep into the less developed and mostly agricultural Guangxi province. There, we saw the hauntingly beautiful karst mountains along the Li River near Yangshuo and the Longsheng Rice Terraces near Guilin.
However, this blog entry isn’t about what I saw around Guilin. You can see for yourself in the photo collage I’ve provided here! Rather, I was most impressed by the 1,800 kilometers of road and expressways that took us to our destination and back home.
It’s that time of year – yes, holiday shopping season! Whether it’s for you or for family and friends, online retailers are offering spectacular deals – especially on Cyber Monday. This online shopping “holiday” made its debut on Nov. 28, 2005, and has quickly become one of the largest online shopping days of the year.
According to comScore, the 2010 U.S. online holiday shopping season brought in a record-breaking $32.6 billion in retail spending. This marked a 12 percent increase over 2009. Cyber Monday made history when consumer spending exceeded $1 billion for the first time in a single day. As internet commerce continues to grow, package delivery is becoming an important element of the full customer experience.
After the leftovers from Thanksgiving are eaten and family and friends have traveled back home, maybe it’s time for a little online shopping. But while you’re online, make sure you also sign up for UPS My ChoiceSM, a new service that places greater control over home delivery in the hands of consumers.
In the seven years I spent in the U.S. Marine Corps, I met countless remarkable men and women who day in and day out committed themselves to serving our country and helping keep its citizens safe. Many of my fellow Marines stayed in the service and served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of them will be soon coming home.
Over the next several months, tens of thousands of men and women will return from deployment in Iraq, Afghanistan and Southeast Asia. Opportunities in the private sector are needed to provide these individuals a smooth transition into civilian life. Veteran unemployment rates are 11.7% and 22% for veterans under 25 years. These are staggering and undeserved numbers among the men and women who have honorably served to help keep our nation free.
Since 2003, The UPS Store has participated in the International Franchise Association (IFA) VetFran Initiative, a voluntary effort of IFA member-companies that is designed to encourage franchise ownership by offering financial incentives to honorably discharged veterans. In that time, approximately 150 The UPS Store locations have opened under this program, providing more than $700,000 in discounts to these men and women.
It seems like summer was just a few short weeks ago, but there’s no denying it … the holiday season is here. And with the holidays comes logistics. Shopping for gifts, planning parties, sending greeting cards and shipping.
To help get holiday logistics under control, UPS and The UPS Store will host a series of Twitter parties to spark ideas and share tips for holiday planning. Joining us in the Twitter conversations are savvy bloggers who will lead the discussions along with a team of panelists. In the spirit of transparency, we want to disclose that we are compensating the blogger moderators and panelists.
Along with great ideas, our Twitter parties will feature prize drawings every 15 minutes. We’re giving away gift cards to The UPS Store and to UPS customers Soft Surroundings, Wayfair.com and Anderson Seafoods. Want to win? Participate by tweeting during the party and including the party hashtag. RSVP by posting a comment and your Twitter handle to this blog post.
