This Month’s Compass Articles: Win a Returns Process Makeover, UPS Holiday Dates
Thanksgiving

Just like that – the holidays are upon us. At UPS, we call this time of year “peak season” as we go into full-swing to dispatch a heavy volume of packages far and wide. And, of course, it’s also peak season for online retailers. The sharp rise in cyber shopping in recent years has caused these retailers to seek competitive advantages via the consumer experience.

Free shipping, a user-friendly website with good imagery, responsive customer service – they’re important factors. But one often overlooked variable: the returns process. As this Compass Online article explains, hassle-free returns create customer loyalty. Think your business could use an overhaul in this department? Well, good news: we’re running a promotion for November – “Win a Makeover of Your Returns Process” – in which UPS consultants examine and implement a winning strategy for two lucky entrants.

Honoring Our Veterans
American flags

I’m proud of my father’s service as a medic in the U.S. Army for six years. Being deployed away from home for long periods of time and possibly in harm’s way is a sacrifice that is hard to repay.

UPS is also proud of their military employees. In fact, approximately 25,000 UPSers are veterans and about 2,500 UPSers are currently on military leave.

This Sunday is Veteran’s Day, a holiday honoring and thanking all United States Armed Forces members for their service. We asked UPSers to share their stories about serving in the military. Here are just a couple of them:

Want to be Santa’s Helper? We’re Hiring Seasonal Employees
Holiday delivery

Could you use some extra money to help pay for those extra holiday gifts?

A recent survey reports that Americans have spent about $650 per household on holiday gifts for loved ones over the past two years. As my household continues to grow, I’d say that number is conservative.

UPS is currently hiring approximately 1,000 seasonal employees in the Louisville area, with jobs starting at $20 an hour for full-time seasonal drivers. Driver helpers are also needed, with those jobs starting at $12.88 an hour. There’s also a need for part-time package handlers who work a few hours each day starting at $8.50 an hour. Both day and night-shift positions are available.

It’s not quite Halloween but it’s already time to start thinking about the holidays.

I may not have my list for Santa ready, but here at UPS we’ve been planning our holiday logistics all year. We’ll add 55,000 extra brown-suited Santa helpers to help deliver more packages this year than ever – more than half a billion!

And, Thursday, December 20 – which is just 51 days away – will be the busiest day in our history when we’ll deliver more than 28 million packages – that’s more than 300 packages every second of the day.

Happy 1 Year Anniversary UPS My Choice!
UPS My Choice 1st Anniversary Cookie Cake

It’s hard to believe that just a year ago we launched UPS My Choice. We’ve signed up more than 1.8 million consumers since then and delivered more than 20 million packages to My Choice members. We continue to hear from our customers how using My Choice makes receiving packages much easier. We also get lots of questions, such as:

Q: I am going to be traveling this holiday season and don’t want to have any packages delivered while I am gone.  Can I have my packages held?

A: Yes! We recently added a vacation option.  All you need to do is navigate to your preferences page under the “Vacation Options” section and tell us when you will be gone. Select whether you want us to deliver your packages to your local The UPS Store (good for vacations lasting up to 7 days) or have us deliver them the day after you return (good for vacations lasting up to 14 days).

Christmas in August
driving in snow

As much as this pains me to say, I’m not perfect. And while I like to be organized, well, sometimes I’m just not.

See, I’ve got full-time kids and a full-time job with a full-time husband and a full-time house.  These things demand more hours than days provide, so when the holidays roll around, I make the effort to start early because I know that no matter how hard I try, I’ll end late.

Tis’ the Season… To Return
Shipping a holiday gift

Tis’ the season to give – receive – and now return. The National Retail Federation estimates shoppers will return more than $46 billion in merchandise this year – that’s up almost 10 percent from two years ago.

Returns season is in full swing at UPS. Today consumers will return more than 500,000 packages!  It’s so many, we’re calling it National Returns Day. Just like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we now have a self-proclaimed, unofficial holiday.

With the rise in online shopping this year more people are returning those gifts they couldn’t try on or touch before Christmas. The math is easy: more online shopping = more returns. Many retailers now offer free return shipping, making it even easier for consumers to swap wrong sizes and colors. Today’s deluge of returns will keep our drivers busy delivering just as many packages back to retailers on January 6, 2012.
