As Humanitarian Engineering & Logistics Manager, I am involved with The UPS Foundation and its support of CARE, Red Cross, Good360 and MedShare. UPS’s logistics expertise assists the non-government organizations (NGOs) in three categories:  In-kind Transportation, Emergency In-kind Transportation and Capacity Building.

My responsibility pertains to the third category—Capacity Building. My job is done before a disaster happens and should make a positive impact on how an NGO functions during and after a disaster. We’re basically facilitating logistics, which is simply defined as the movement of goods, information and finances.

I was working at a homeless shelter in 2000 when I went to the Atlanta Community ToolBank to pick up tools for a volunteer project. Once described as “Home Depot on steroids”, I was awestruck by the thousands of shovels and rakes, hundreds of cordless drills and ladders, dozens of generators and miter saws, and nearly 170 other tool types ready for borrowing by charitable organizations.

At UPS, we understand that logistics can save lives. When disaster strikes, we team up with the World Food Programme (WFP) – among other humanitarian partners – to deliver much-needed aid to vulnerable populations all over the world. We recently facilitated a flight to Entebbe, Uganda, carrying 92 metric tons of High Energy Biscuits (HEBs) to assist WFP efforts in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where civil conflict has driven many people out of their homes and into hunger.

I have had the good fortune to work at UPS for more than 24 years and over the course of my career I’ve seen our company do some pretty amazing things. Most recently, in the aftermath of what has been called the storm of the century, UPSers throughout the northeast are working through some incredibly difficult challenges to serve their customers – in many cases, even when their customers haven’t yet reopened for business.
