UPS golf ambassador Louis Oosthuizen dazzled his onlooking countrymen while holding off Scotland’s Scott Jamieson to win the 2013 Volvo Golf Champions in Durban, South Africa last weekend. Louis shot a closing round 66 to catch the field and claim his first victory of the 2013 golf season.

After a disappointing 3^rd round that saw Louis shoot a 74 (I would take that in a heartbeat, but enough about my golf game), he stormed out of the gates on Sunday birdieing six of the first 11 holes and setting a blistering pace to the last round.

It’s always exciting to track the progress of our three golf ambassadors, but 2012 has been a particularly incredible year.

It started with Louis Oosthuizen winning the first European Tour event of the year, the Africa Open, in January. What better way to start? He then came within an inch, literally, of winning the Masters, losing in a playoff to Bubba Watson. He did provide one of the tournament’s most spectacular moments ever with his famous double-eagle at the 2^nd hole. Just one short week later, Louis recorded his second victory of the season by winning the Maybank Malaysian Open.

I grew up around the game of golf – driving the cart around the course, holding the flag so that my parents could sink in a putt, and doing the math to tell my mom how well (or poorly) she was doing.

Much to my father’s chagrin, I never picked up the sport.  I found it very frustrating to be precise when hitting such a little ball.  Hand/eye coordination has never been my strong suit.

Our ambassadors Lee Westwood, Louis Oosthuizen, and Jeev Milkha Singh will be teeing off today at The Open Championship and we wish them the best of luck.  Bring home that Claret Jug!

I was on fire the first time I went to a driving range, scalding those little white balls far and straight. I couldn’t understand why everyone complained that this sport was so difficult. Guess I was just a natural. The next morning I made my course debut and proceeded to shoot a 75. On the first hole.

Although my golf career ended abruptly, I still enjoy watching the experts ply their trade, especially Lee Westwood, who is one of three golfers representing UPS in tournament play and at customer hospitality and brand promotion events.
