A Retired Marine’s Salute to Supporting Literacy
Toys for Tots Literacy Program

To me, the holidays are a time to celebrate with family, give back to those in need, and appreciate the people around us. As a former Marine Corps Major and The UPS Store owner in Kearney, Missouri, I know how important giving back to those in need is. I’m proud to be a part of a network of businesses that support the community and those less fortunate within it.

I’ve been supporting the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, a foundation that donates new toys to children each holiday season, for over 40 years. So when The UPS Store franchise network teamed up with them in 2008 to create the Toys for Tots Literacy Program, a cause dedicated to providing less fortunate children in our communities with new books, I immediately started to think about how well this would blend in with our existing community support of education, including providing teacher discounts and supporting the “Take a New Teacher to Lunch” program put on by our Chamber of Commerce.

United Way’s Women’s Leadership Conference: Focus on Childhood Literacy

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend the 10th anniversary of the United Way’s Women’s Leadership Conference in Newport Beach, Calif. At the conference, they called on the membership to focus on early childhood literacy in their local communities. This call-to-action resonated with me as The UPS Store network has an exclusive program with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation—the Toys for Tots Literacy Program.

The Toys for Tots Literacy Program offers our nation’s most economically disadvantaged children the ability to compete academically and to succeed in life by providing them direct access to books that will enhance their ability to read and to communicate effectively.

Celebrate National Summer Learning Day

On Monday, our nation will not only celebrate the start of summer but also National Summer Learning Day, a day to observe the importance of summer learning. Studies show that “more than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities.”*

To help fight this “summer slide,” The UPS Store franchisees in Washington, D.C., and the Toys for Tots Literacy Program last month donated 1,200 books to five elementary schools, one age-appropriate book for each student to take home and enjoy over the summer.
