United Way’s Women’s Leadership Conference: Focus on Childhood Literacy

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend the 10th anniversary of the United Way’s Women’s Leadership Conference in Newport Beach, Calif. As a member of Women’s Leadership Development at UPS, it was rewarding to see a group of women come together to make a difference in their communities. At the conference, they called on the membership to focus on early childhood literacy in their local communities. This call-to-action resonated with me as The UPS Store network has an exclusive program with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation—the Toys for Tots Literacy Program.

Celebrate National Summer Learning Day

On Monday, our nation will not only celebrate the start of summer but also National Summer Learning Day, a day to observe the importance of summer learning. Studies show that “more than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities.”*

To help fight this “summer slide,” The UPS Store franchisees in Washington, D.C., and the Toys for Tots Literacy Program last month donated 1,200 books to five elementary schools, one age-appropriate book for each student to take home and enjoy over the summer.
