Student Video Contest

What do an ancient marathoner, a cosmic urban hero, and a snorkeler all have in common? They’re all characters born from the minds of animation students for a contest on the theme of We Love Logistics.

UPS and the Film and Television University “Konrad Wolf” Potsdam-Babelsberg (HFF) – one of the premiere film universities in Germany – have teamed up for an animation competition based on UPS’s love for logistics. The task wasn’t to create a commercial – students were instead asked to produce a funny, emotional, creative, or surprising animated film that captured the essence and passion of logistics.

As someone who is fresh out of undergrad and currently dealing with the grad school application process, I’m quite well-versed about just how huge of an obstacle tuition fees can be for many students. I worked two jobs during my undergrad tenure but still needed some outside assistance. Unfortunately, for many this outside help isn’t available.

That’s why programs such as the Hispanic Scholarship Fund are so important. During the last 31 years The UPS Foundation has provided nearly $2 million in support to help families and students with the financial and educational resources they need to achieve a college education.

How do you keep chiffon shimmering, pleats well placed and crape un-crushed as high-fashion garments are shipped across the globe from the runways of Milan to the racks in the posh shops of Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills? As both fashion designers and retailers know, shipping clothes presents a special challenge. Delicate fabrics can shift, fold, wrinkle and crease inside a box, and intricately constructed garments can lose their shape in transit. UPS looked to industrial design students at the University for Technology Eindhoven (TU/e) in the Netherlands to find a new way to ship haute couture garments sustainably and keep them pristine as they travel from plane to package car through the UPS network.

The challenge: to create a single-seat, formula-style weekend racer for an amateur driver – following specific technical specifications, emissions standards and safety features – as well as producing a bottom-to-top plan to bring it to market.

I’m thrilled to share that the UPS $100,000 challenge grant to Donor Choose in support of environmental projects has been matched completely by individual donors.

In 2010, UPS made a $100,000 grant to Donors Choose to support 50% of costs for rural environmental projects for local school children. With help from local agencies, Donors Choose recruited teachers in rural communities across the country to submit environmental projects in 255 different cities. The teachers needed resources like water testing kits, weather forecasting instruments, compost bins, stream modeling set-ups, and butterfly gardens for projects that help children learn about how things work in their environment. And, the money went directly to the teachers to support these projects.

The Magic Behind Logistics
Category: Logistics
Tags: , , , ,

By now, many people have seen the Logistics of NCAA Basketball® video spots that aired in conjunction with March Madness. The premise of these commercials was that basketball is a game of logistics, getting the ball to the right people, in the right place at the right time.

The same holds true for UPS and its customers. When a package arrives to its final destination on time, few people know – or even think about – how that successful delivery was made possible. Even fewer ponder how the same success story happens over and over again for 15 million packages each day.
